The ultimate argument for "fake it 'til you make it" - when I was twelve, and the "loner, not popular" girl in my church group, I decided to act in a different way early one evening at an event and by the end of the evening, not only had the popular girls folded me into their group but they seemed to almost view me as their leader. Of course, I had to do it by being a snarky "mean girl" which I couldn't keep up (nor wanted to) but it did show me the power of a persona.
